On 30th of September 2016, one of ads LED screen in the traffic near Kemang was hacked. The tragedy happens in the rush hours after Moslem prayer. A porn video being displayed for about ten minutes long. Thus, made the pedestrian as well as drivers shocked, some even documented the situation during the incident. Although it might be some hackings or tragedy, but in different approach, we can analyse the different respond among the society.
As the motives of the culprit is pure prank, does it have any other meaning? Let’s take a look on the advertisement that published by dunking doughnut about their new product, the chocolate doughnut. Back in 2013, this ads being shut down after people start implying racism. The ads showing a white woman turn into black woman after eating the doughnut, strange, isn’t it? However, it was huge success for the company to attract their costumer to buy the new product. In this case, the pure accident could bring profit. In contradiction to the porn video incident, it was a pure incident, but ended up tragic. The culprit is accused for jails punishment for about seven until eighth years.
During the “screening” of the porn video on videotron, why the pedestrians and the drivers stop and even have time to record it? Knowing Indonesian people is really obedient toward their religion, is this some kind of human nature? We often interpreted the religion as laws to do and to not do, we follow them. Thus, we make a belief on something “someone” created. However, during the incident, why people responding to the porn video and not looking away? Is that a human nature that start taking over from signified into signifier? As Barthes mentioned in his book, connotation over denotation, human nature over their religion. As we might see people based on race and religion, however, we are describing and interpreting the person differently. And thus, during the “screening” of the porn, we can barely describe the denotation, but it is much easier to describe the connotation as we can see some people are enjoying the video, some are shocked, some are avoiding the video.
However, the motive was simply because the culprit saw a username and password for log in displayed in the screen. Thus, he intended to do prank, but ended up in jail. As the motives of the culprit is pure prank, I cannot comprehend the meaning of it based on the semiotic approach. Unless, he wants to be famous, that will be in different story.
