Week 5 Turbulent by Shirin Neshat analysis

Turbulent by Shirin Neshat analysis

The turbulent short movie is practically amazing. I listened to this for about 5 times and still very amused with how powerful this short movie can be. Turbulent has a deep hidden message inside. With the two split screen in black white, it represents two different gender in the past. Black white was practically how the we see the world, there is always two side and by the splitting screen method, we are even get the message clearer. There are two different place for human, and those are for woman and man. The left side is the man place while the right is the woman place. Although the reason is not valid, but I do resemble this as the right hand always used for good purposed (it is social believe that right hands is for good), while the left hand used for harder work (thus, represent how strong a man can be). The interesting part of the short movie was how the man and woman sing. The room in the right side is empty indicating that the woman sings in silence with no audience, only the air is her audience. However, in the left side, the man sings in gracefully with many audiences. Thus, we can see how man is seen in the society, woman has less power and man has more power. The audience resembles how much power the gender has. Furthermore, when both of them start singing, the man sings it verbally, with words and lyrics. In contradiction, the woman sings in the only her sounds, no words come out. This can be said that the man has force and power to influence other by his words and thus make man has higher social status in the past, they can speak to anyone about their opinion. Sadly, for the woman, she cannot sing with the lyrics, they cannot influence other human being with their opinion. She sings to the nature and hoping the world will listen to her voice.
